My Very Personal Connection: The Death of Andrea and Brock Damude
On the morning of Saturday, March 10th 2012, concerned neighbors reported to Durham Regional Police a suspicious looking vehicle, a 2003 white Ford Taurus, abandoned in a Sunderland, Ontario farmers field. The owner of the property was known to be away in Florida, and the surrounding neighbors had agreed to keep an eye on the property for the owner.
Upon arrival and inspection of the vehicle, officers were disturbed to find the bodies of a woman and infant child in the trunk of the white sedan. Through information gathered at the scene they were able to determine the bodies were that of Andrea Damude and her 8 month old son, Brock Damude. An immediate cause of death was not readily available and the bodies were sent to Toronto for autopsy and toxicology findings.
Through statements made by both family, and friends, police were able to trace the last movements of Andrea and her son immediately before the discovery of their bodies. It was reported that Andrea and Brock were making their way from their home in Petawawa, Ontario to Andrea's hometown of Orillia, Ontario to visit her parents for her birthday weekend. Andrea's husband, Brett, had followed his wife and son in his own vehicle until they separated near Highway 401 as he was on his way to his parents home in Strathroy, Ontario.
The family had departed their home on Friday however, Andrea and Brock did not arrive as they were supposed to and were instead discovered dead early Saturday morning.
The initial inference made by media outlets was that of postpartum depression on the part of Andrea, and many articles focused primarily on FaceBook posts made by Andrea which quoted the young mother as being at her wits end regarding the difficulties she'd been having with her young son.
Since there had been reports of their being no physical trauma to either mother or child, the findings of a toxicology screen were being waited on before the Durham Regional Police made their final statements regarding the cause of death for both Andrea and Brock.
The final findings would not be disclosed until October 13th of 2012, and because there were no toxicology concerns, the Durham Regional Police closed the case citing Murder/Suicide.
Now because Andrea was my friend, and because I knew how much having a child of her own meant to her I did not take the news that this had been deemed a Murder/Suicide very well. Instead of just sitting idly by and taking what the police had decided at face value, I spent quite a bit of time online researching what I could find about the case.
In part two of this blog I will cover lingering questions that I have which were fueled in part by allegations a mysterious Kit494 has made, in addition to other findings in this case.
